PRINT THIS AUTO ACCIDENT CHECKLIST AND KEEP IT ON YOUR GLOVE BOX FOR REFERENCE
If you find yourself in an auto accident, complete the following steps:
- Ensure Safety:
Check for injuries. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. - Move to a Safe Location:
If it’s safe to do so and you’re not seriously injured, move your vehicle out of further harm’s way, like to the shoulder of the road. - Call the Police:
Even for minor accidents, a police report can be invaluable when dealing with your car insurance company and other drivers. Cooperate fully, but avoid admitting fault or blaming others while at the scene. - Document the Incident:
- Take pictures: Capture photos of the accident scene, your vehicle, other vehicles involved, and any visible injuries.
- Take notes: Write down the details of the accident while they’re fresh in your mind. Include details like the time, location, the direction you were headed, the weather and road conditions, etc.
- Collect Information:
Exchange information with other drivers involved in the accident. Gather their name, contact info, driver’s license number, license plate number, and insurance information. - Identify Witnesses:
If there are any witnesses, try to get their contact information; they may be able to help your claim. - Report the Accident to Your Insurance Provider:
Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. They can guide you through the process and tell you what documents they need. - Seek Medical Attention:
Sometimes injuries caused by car accidents aren’t immediately noticeable. Most insurers will cover the cost of a doctor’s visit for an accident-related check-up. - Follow up on Your Claim:
Your insurance company will assign a claims adjuster to inspect the damage and estimate the cost of repairs. Stay in contact with your adjuster and provide any necessary information.
Remember, it’s always a good idea to keep this checklist in your vehicle, along with necessary emergency items like a first-aid kit, flashlight, and warning triangles.
Stay safe on the road!
